Sunny D and her brother Cody had been through so much prior to coming to us. Their owner had abruptly passed away while in the home, leaving behind SunnyD and Cody, along with other cats. The owner was an incredible woman who rescued cats that nobody else wanted. She of course adopted Sunny D and Cody so they would have eachother in the home and then also rescued plenty of strays and gave them a loving sanctuary with her. After her passing, a supporter reached out to us pleading for help with the two. Both cats being leukemia positive, she knew animal control was not an option and these cats needed a place to call home after losing their owner. Of course we said yes and the journey of getting Cody and Sunny D to Blind Cat Rescue started! We have to give a big shout out to not only the incredible supporter and her friend who alerted us and drove the pair four hours to us, one way, but also some other very kind women who picked them up from the home and watched them until they were able to be driven down. Sunny D and Cody are currently decompressing from their journey and quarantining before they join the kiddos in Room 3 in House 1! Sunny D is the more social of the two at the moment and loves to head bonk your hand and meow at you. We are so excited to share them with you all!

7/8/2026 Dear Supporters, This is a letter we truly didn't expect to write. Yesterday, Sunny D went to the veterinarian for the routine wellness examination that all of our Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary cats receive twice a year, not including when we have concerns. She had experienced some weight loss, but nothing that had raised immediate alarm over the past week. When I returned to pick up the cats, the veterinarian met me and told me that Sunny D had suffered an emergency and was being given oxygen. We immediately ran her bloodwork in-house rather than sending it to an outside laboratory as we normally do so we could get answers as quickly as possible. While we waited for the results, I sat with Sunny D, giving her all the love I could and sharing a few Churu treats with her. As the results came in, our hearts sank. Sunny D was severely anemic, and her body was no longer able to produce new red blood cells. There were no treatments that would change the outcome, and the kindest gift we could give her was to let her go peacefully. Many of you know that Sunny D came to Blind Cat Rescue with her adoptive brother, Cody, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge last year due to complications from FeLV. Sadly, FeLV is a disease that eventually catches up with so many of these wonderful cats. They only break our hearts once, but they fill them with immeasurable love for every day they are here. Even in her final moments, Sunny D continued to be an ambassador for FeLV- positive cats. Several veterinary students happened to be at the clinic, and I had the opportunity to share Sunny D's story with them, how she had lived to be eight years old, far exceeding the expectations many people have for FeLV-positive cats. She showed everyone that these cats are so much more than a diagnosis. With love, proper care, and a chance, they can live happy, meaningful lives. As we all gathered to say our goodbyes, or perhaps, "see you later", I found comfort in remembering just how loved Sunny D was throughout her life. She first found someone with a special place in their heart for FeLV-positive cats, and because of that compassionate person, she and Cody were given a chance. After their original owner passed away, they found another forever family here at Blind Cat Rescue, where they were cherished every single day. Today, I like to imagine Sunny D reunited with Cody, her other siblings, and the person who first gave her that second chance. She is healthy again, free from illness, and finally able to roll in all the catnip she wants without any consequences. Thank you for the love you have shown Sunny D over the past two years. Your sponsorship provided far more than food and medical care, it gave her security, comfort, and a family who loved her.
