Camille

Approximate Age (As of 2017): 11-12 years Breed: Domestic Short Hair Status: Seeing Date Arrived: 2007 Arrival Location: North Carolina
Camille was found inside of a taped up box that had been left at the gate of a shelter near us. She had a terrible eye infection and they thought she was, or would be, visually impaired so they asked us to take her. When she came to us she was very friendly just sick. We initially agreed that she did appear blind and it looked like her eyes needed removal they were so damaged/infected. We put her on antibiotics though and she made a full recovery, not ending up blind after all. Obviously, though we are a blind cat rescue, just because she ended up being able to see did not mean we were going to make her go elsewhere, especially after being left so cruelly. It’s now been over 10 years since she came to BCR and she is a happy, sweet, and friendly girl. She loves attention and relaxing with the other cats.
You may watch her Live 24 hours a day on her MeShare Camera. She is in House 1, room 2.

2/7/2019 This breaks my heart to be writing. If you follow us on social media you know that Camille has been struggling for the last month with her health. She had many ulcers in her mouth and tongue. She was losing weight and miserable. Lots of meds that were not working. The vet placed a feeding tube so we could give her mouth a break from eating, we could easily give her food and medication. We were giving her twice the calories she needs per day and should be gaining or at least not losing weight, yet she continued losing weight and was absolutely miserable. She clearly had the look of a cat who is exhausted and it is time to let her go. Camille has been with us for approx 11 years. Losing her is an extra hard one. She was such a gentle loving cat. The other cats will miss her because she loved to cuddle and sleep with them. You would always find her curled up with someone. Camille spent her last hours laying in the sun, all the staff spending extra time with her. I held her in my arms as she left this earth. I will miss her very much! We want answers, we want to know what really the ulcers were about. We strongly suspect that the ulcers were actually mouth cancer. We are hoping a necropsy will give us some answers.
The necropsy confirmed what we thought. She had mouth, nasal and ocular cancer.
